Letter To The Free Analysis
Mise En Scene
- The black square hovering could reflect on how black people are treated as objects, they are exploited and not treated fairly.
- At the very end of the music video, the black square is hovering outside which suggest that black people deserve freedom. it can also suggest that they are not free because back in slavery the black people worked in agricultural land.- The black drummer isn't facing the camera, which suggests that he wants to be alone, he may be worried about of the white people would portray him if his face was put on the media.
- Some of the black people are not wearing shoes which reflects on the suffering they went through in slavery
- At one point we see 'No Excessive Sound' which suggests that no one wants to hear noises coming from black people and there is a basketball net which is a typical sport that black people played, a lot of noise is made when playing basketball. Ironic as there is a lot of loud noises in prisons in general, the black people may be shouting for freedom as they are behind bars.
Editing
- The video is in black and white which suggests the dull situation. It can reflect on the separation between the blacks and the whites, jail or freedom, good or evil.
- The light is shining on the black object and in some area of the music video the light is shining on the black people, which can reflect on how the white people look down on black people
- The lighting doesn't show the peoples faces, reflects on how the whites don't care about black peoples identities.
Cinematography
- The long far away shots - make the people hard to recognise which reflects on how black people are not recognised as bright people, which makes the artist appear smaller to the frame, this shows that the artists it trying to show that the message is what matters not the faces.
- Slow camera movement - reflects on how progression for freedom is slow going. The camera is drifting through time.
- There are no close up shots of the peoples faces, which reflects on how
Narrative
- The repetition of 'freedom' reflects on the need for freedom, rights, running away from slavery. Similarly to the song 'wade on the water' by Eva Cassidy.
- 'For America to rise it's a matter of Black Lives And we gonna free them, so we can free us' - Since white people still don’t seem to care and probably won’t care enough in the future (as told in the previous lines) black people that made it out will be the ones helping each other achieving great things. People need to acknowledge all of that and work on it, give people of colour opportunities to get out of the misery.
