'The Killing uses narrative code appropriate genre'
Neale believes that films of a type of genre, for example, film noir should include features that are similar, so the audience knows it is a film noir, but also include features that are different, to keep an audience interested. For example in the killing, it has film noir components such as extreme close-ups, a damp urban location, a detective, a damsel in distress but what is different is that there is no heavy smoking or drinking.
